A demolition & a myth: mass hysteria?
A brief timeline
In the Official Local Newspaper
On the morning of Jan 9th 20--, the Department for Property Development
announced the planned demolition of X—Li before the end of this year,
to pave the way for the construction of a brand new residential complex
in cooperation with the property developer H--. Residents can expect
an ultimatum of mid-September to vacate from the neighborhood, and are
advised to begin arrangements beforehand. Financial compensation will
duly follow. Department spokesperson Mr. P--, in his speech in front
of the local property committee today, emphasized order and reason for
this upcoming project, stressing that residents should under no circumstances
“cause a panic” or “stir up unnecessary conflicts” that in any way obstruct
due procedures.
In a Local Gossip News Column
In recent weeks, our editor has received dozens of letters from our readers
and concerned locals that pertain to sightings of half-human, half-goat
creatures in the neighborhood of X—Li. Descriptions vary widely, from
“an ugly, scabby thing with monstrous eyes” to “[a creature] I would
have mistaken for a benign elderly man, had I not seen a pair of goat
legs (hideously hairy) projecting from its hindquarters.” Furthermore,
this hybrid creature has been variously reported to appear during daytime
and nighttime, and its feeding habits compared variously to a herbivore
and a scavenger. One point of consistency our editor has been able to
glean from these reports is that the creature seems to appear and disappear
at will, and to evaporate in the darkest shadows and the brightest sunlight
alike. These mysterious characteristics, combined with recent developments
in the area, have inflamed rumors and discussion surrounding their behavior
and origins. A connection has also been drawn to several unexplained
recent disappearances of residents, who have been found virtually unreachable
by their concerned friends and neighbors. Can this connection be valid?
Or is it only the product of mass paranoia? We have contacted the local
government for comment, but have yet to receive a response.
